Traeh's Big Chop

"In [the video below], I will be showing you a portion of my journey from relaxed hair to natural hair. I did my big chop January 28th, 2014. I've been transitioning since Summer 13' (not sure of the exact date). Initially I was going to transition but I got tired of having thin relaxed hair and trying to deal with two textures so I just decided to do my big chop. I am also on a no heat journey so that I can improve the overall health of my hair. I hope my journey inspires you to go natural whether you decide to transition or do the big chop. In my experience, I believe the big chop was the best thing for me to do. The only regret I have is that I wish I did my big chop sooner :)"  ~ Traeh

It's not a fad... My hair is beautiful!

As the hair care and beauty industry grows, so does the controversy surrounding black/ethnic and non-white hair. It has always been a global topic of discussion and subject of curiosity. However, at the start of this school year, it made headlining news and affected one of the world's most precious beings - children. In several states, and on one too many occasions, little girls have been either verbally reprimanded or told to leave school because of their "unacceptable" and "inappropriate" natural hair styles. In response to this controversy, TWELVE18 Media releases a very empowering Public Service Announcement sponsored by Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils, encouraging young girls to love who they are AND the hair they are naturally born with. The PSA entitled "My Natural Hair Is Beautiful" addresses the messages that society and the media send to little girls about natural hair, presents the questions and insecurities they will inevitably be faced with, and offers a simple yet powerful and universal solution of non-judgmental acceptance.

My Hair Doesn’t Look Right... by Zaneta

Confessions of a Naturalista: My Hair Doesn’t Look Right
By Zaneta Mungai

It’s no secret that I have a love/hate relationship with my hair. Sometimes I think I have the perfect hairstyle and then there are other times when I just don’t like the way that my hair looks. I’m pretty sure that this happens to everyone, but for some reason I think naturals tend to take it to heart more when they don’t achieve a certain look that they are going for. Out of this frustration some people even want to go back to relaxing their hair. But we have to remember that everyone has bad hair days. And if you seem to be having more than usual, perhaps something in your hair care routine needs to be adjusted. Sometimes deep conditioning and trimming your hair can make a world of difference in how your hair looks. Another important thing to remember is that the beauty of our hair is intertwined with its ability to look unique and “wild.” Big messy hair can be your greatest asset. It sets you apart from the crowd and puts your natural beauty on display. So, don’t get too caught up in achieving the perfect look. Perfection is found in loving your hair and giving it the best possible care. Remember to treat your hair well and good hair days will follow.

So So Natural Apparel!!

I am in love with my new t-shirt from So So Natural! The shirt has a beautiful profile image of a natural women and it reads Shaped Beautifully Like My Hair.  I asked Paula how she got started with creating this great t-shirts, and here is what she had to say - "I started this business was because I searched for Natural Hair tees for weeks and couldn't find any for less than $28. I made it a personal mission to figure out how I could produce affordable t-shirts for every budget. I then started producing totes because who doesn't want to rock their "fav" shirt with a cute tote? That's it in a nutshell. I am someone who embraced their natural beauty and wanted to "wear and share" at the same time...lol."

Wonderful Paula! To see this t-shirt, go here. And to learn more about So So Natural, go to their website for more information.

The Unwritten Rules: Let's Talk Hair

The Unwritten Rules: Let's Talk Hair is a hilarious video, with a comedic spin on what happens in the work environment, when people react to a persons cultural differences. I love this video, because any one that has followed this blog long enough, will know that I worked on corporate America for about 15 years. Even though I gained a lot of expereince and learned some life lessons, during my time in the corporate world, I experienced a lot of ignorance based on race, my culture and my hair. So this video speaks to me on so many levels.  I must say that I have a wildly diverse group of friends and family, so racism is not a part of my vocabulary or way of thinking. But! There are indeed some misunderstandings that come up with another culture is introduced to something that they are not accustomed too.

The video stars Aasha Davis, as well as some other talented actors. Aasha has also been on Friday Night Lights, House, Grey's Anatomy, and more.  To learn more about The Unwritten Rules: Let's Talk Hair, check out the website, Facebook page and see the video directly on youtube. Also check out the main website to see other episodes. I look forward to seeing all the videos and want to say thank you to Kim Williams, who created and wrote the web episodes, The Unwritten Rules.

Twizted T!

Thank you  Get Twizted for sending me this casual natural girl t-shirt. I am definitely a 'Natural Girl living in Natural World'... :-).  Here is more about the founder of  the t-shirt line Twizted Tees:

"Twizted Tees founded by Tanisha L. Blakemore a t-shirt line celebrating, embracing and promoting natural hair. After two attempts of transitioning from relaxed to natural, 2007 finally marked the year when she no longer wanted to “lye” to herself. She followed thru with the BIG CHOP. Transitioning from relaxed to natural hair for approximately 6 months has evolved into much more than a physical transformation, an emotional and spiritual expedition as well. As a result of this 5-year journey; her self-esteem has skyrocketed, becoming infatuated with her coils, embracing the healthiness, versatility, and texture of her chemical-free hair. Get TWIZTED Tees is the foundation to Tanisha’s overall vision to establish awareness to better living. Her long-term vision for the future is to develop a company that offers organic apparel, chemical free hair and nail services, along with a juice bar, and holistic store. The natural hair revolution broadens the definition of beauty to include unprocessed hair including afros, locs, and flowing spirals of kinks, coils and curls. Get TWIZTED Tees mission is to encourage a foundation of self-pride, embracing hair in its natural state, while promoting products that display self-expression."   Website: www.gettwizted.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/gettwizted
