Understanding Your Finances

"Accountant and owner of EmeryCloud, Danetha Doe, will be hosting a Bookkeeping Basics course for business owners at the World Natural Hair Show in Atlanta, October 6th and 7th. EmeryCloud is based in San Francisco and provides cloud based accounting services. As a model and former NFL Cheerleader, Danetha recognized a need within the beauty and creative industry. Working with freelance artists, stylists and salon owners, she saw a common challenge when they talked about their business- accounting. As artists, numbers and bookkeeping was a daunting, dreadful task.

After working for several companies within their Accounting departments and having a burning desire to run her own company, Danetha decided to take a leap of faith and move from Mammoth Lakes ski resort to San Francisco. Once in San Francisco, she launched a virtual accounting service catering to the specific needs of beauty and creative professionals. As the “Beauty Accountant”, she empowers artists by helping them understand their financials so they can continue to grow and make profitable business decisions. Danetha went natural in June 2009 and has a sweet spot for small business owners within the natural hair industry. She is excited to share her bookkeeping tips at this year’s World Natural Hair show. For more information about EmeryCloud, scheduling a free consultation, and their services, visit www.emerycloud.com. For more information about Danetha Doe’s seminar at the World Natural Hair Show, visit Natural Hair Show Business Workshop."  - Danetha Doe

Giorgio Armani Womenswear Spring-Summer 2013 Review

Variations, nuances, juxtapositions. The world of armani is multifaceted, as if observed through a kaleidoscope that separates, refracts and illuminates. It is ingenious in its use of shapes, fabrics, and its quality of workmanship. Subtle yet profound alterations create soft, naturally deconstructed fits, rendered fluid through the use of gossamer silk and organza.Light overcoats and short, beautifully tailored jackets fit like a glove, and are paired with flowing trousers, measured to perfection above the ankle, or shorts that suddenly bring the legs into sight. The low shoes are masculine yet tapered, the silver heels providing a shimmer of light with every step, while the high shoes come with rhinestone-studded heels. black, turquoise and grey are the main colours, accompanied by jade and light blue softened with white, brightened also in daywear by transparent yarns, crystal touches, and reflections. The sparkle is accentuated for the evening, with a constellation of stars on a navy blue background. Lightness is key, always, and with an added touch of nonchalance.

Romona's Fabulous Hair

"My hair journey began summer of 2011, I've been natural all my life but I never cared for my hair it was extremely heat damaged from all the trips to the hair salon. So I decided that I would take baby steps, so I would never feel like I was forcing myself to stay away from heat. I wore wash n go's for months and then in January I started protective styling. Throughout my journey I've used various different products, but the ones that I truly love are Organics Olive Oil Shampoo and Replenishing Conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter and Olive Oil Eco-Styler. I have a lot of hair so I get a wide range of reactions when people see my hair. Living in New York there are a lot of strange and different people, but yet my hair never fails to amaze people. I've had people touch my hair with out permission, people follow me around bombarding me with questions on what I use, I don't mind at all though. But then unfortunately I've had people doubt me and wither I'm lying about my hair. People always assume that I'm mixed or wear Afro wigs , which is obviously not true. My advice to other women that want to go natural is to first find confidence within yourself , people are going to try to put you down and tell you things like "girl you need slap a perm in that hair", but you cant fall into temptation if this is something you really want to do. Your hair might not look amazing everyday but you have to be confident and realize that this can only lead to healthier hair and a healthier lifestyle."  ~ Romona

Beauty of the Week - Roshell Davis

Name: Roshell Davis

Style inspiration: I pull inspiration from different places. What inspires your fly style: My daily style is inspired by my mood & destination. Combination styles are my fav.

What makes you a Natural Beauty: I rock my hair confidently with hopes to inspire other women and girls to do the same.

Favorite Looks: I love to mix edgy and classic pieces.

How do you like to rock your natural hair: Right now my go-to style is a high puff. I've been natural for almost 11 months. As I get more length I experiment with different styles. I've done a twa, frohawk, braided updo, ponytail updo, twistouts, box braids and french braids.

What advice would you give to others thinking of going natural: Go for it! Make sure you research, it makes the process much easier. Going natural has been one of the best decisions i've made. Hearing my 4-year-old niece exclaim that my hair is like hers is priceless.

Advice for a Natural Girl in New York

"I recently did a big chop and my hair is growing back, but I am a bit discouraged because I do not know what to do with at this point. Do you have any suggestions. I am desperate. Background: I got a relaxer when I was 12, and I loved it (at the time). I was young and I thought that straight was the way to go. However, now that I am older I would like to put away childish things..lol..  My issue was moving from straight to curly. I like the "untamed" look. I loved when my hair curled up. So, I would like to go natural because my hair would be more versatile in that state.

However, my bf hates the short look, and he makes jokes all the time, my family says my hair looks matted now, and I feel very self-conscious, now that my hair is growing back. My bf joked after my big chop -because he says he hates short hair, and my family (some members) liked the short-bald-look, others tolerated it, and others loved it ( mixed reviews). I want to embrace my afro but I am having a hard time. This is my third time transitioning, because I caved the other times, and got a perm, as a result of the negative comments. I live in NY, and I do not know a lot of great natural stylists. In addition, the ones I do know are either very expensive, or are limited as to what they can do. PLEASE let me know if you can help in any way? I tried braids but they slipped off because of the texture and length of my hair. I do not know what else to do." - N.D.

If you have any advice for this natural New Yorker and how to style her hair while in transition or suggestions for natural hair stylist in New York, please reply to this post. Thank you!

Meet Angele!

Name: Angele

Q:  What is your hair story? What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A:  I've stopped using relaxers during my second year of uni, I didn't like the way my hair looked with it so I decided to stop. I also wanted to see what my real texture looked like. So I decided to inform myself, I've started looking at blogs, magazines, videos... to know which products I could use and which styles I could wore. I didn't want to do a big chop, so I transitioned for about 2 years, I mainly wore weaves and every time I took one of I would trim my hair until I reached a size which I thought was alright to cut off all the relaxed ends. Now, I've been fully natural for 3 years and I'm not going back!

Q:  What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?
A:  I can't live without coconut oil, Kera care edge tamer and castor oil. I love oils! I use coconut oil for moisturizing and shine and castor oil for hair growth. Kera care edge tame is the best edge tamer I've found.

Q:  What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A:  Just do it! There is so many things you can do with natural hair, you might be surprised. If you don't like it you can still go back to relaxers.

Q:  How can we keep up with you and your journey?
A:  You can contact me via twitter @angele_abena.
